Canes Finish 3rd at Jim West Challenge

SAN MARCOS, Texas – The University of Miami golf team posted its second straight top-three finish, claiming third at the Jim West Challenge on Monday at the par-72, 6,287-yard Kissing Tree Golf Club.

After finishing just two-over par (290) in round one, the Hurricanes posted back-to-back under-par rounds in the second (278; -10) and third (280; -8) to finish with total score of 848 (-16) for third-place.

“I’m so proud of how the girls came back today,” said head coach Patti Rizzo. “They really finished strong and are doing great. I’m looking forward to our next tournament.”

UM finished a stroke ahead of No. 15 Florida State and three strokes ahead of No. 14 Texas A&M.

No. 2-ranked Oklahoma State claimed the team title with a score of 825 (-39), while 20th-ranked TCU finished second (832; -32).

Miami finished second in the 15-team field in par-three scoring (3.08; +5) and total birdies with 62. The Canes were second in the field with a par-five scoring average of 4.62 (-23).

Back-to-back five-under par (67) rounds in the second and third boosted Daniella Barrett seven spots up the individual leaderboard to finish tied for seventh with a score of 208 (-8). Barrett finished second in the individual field with 16 total birdies.

It was a strong shooting performance who fired all three rounds below par with a 70 (-2) in rounds one and two, and a 69 (-3) in the final round. She finished tied for 10th with a 54-hole total of 209 (-7).

Kristyna Frydlova finished under par in round two (70; -2) and round three (69; -3) of the tournament, finishing with a three-round total of four-under par (212). She tied for 17th. Frydlova posted the second-best par-three scoring average for individuals, 2.83 (-2).

Morgan Pankow and Anna Backman each tied 50th with a score of 222 (+6).

Miami will have a short turnaround as it heads to the Bahamas to host the White Sands Invitational beginning Friday thru Sunday.
